Joint mobilisation and manipulation

Passive movements applied to a joint to restore movement or relieve pain.

Mobilisations are usually slow movements, sometimes with oscillations or with a hold or stretch on a joint.

Manipulations are stronger movements applied at a high speed.

A complementary medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body at specific points to relieve pain, release tight areas (trigger points) in muscles and balance the flow of energy within the body.

Research shows that acupuncture can reduce pain by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals

Pain management

It is not possible to separate the body from the mind – they work in partnership. Effective management therefore changes both the body and the mind.

Pain is complex and usually caused by a combination of physical, lifestyle and cognitive factors:

  • Physical factors are things like your posture and how you move. Your nerves and nervous system play an important part in pain and sometimes part of the nervous system can become sensitive or process pain signals incorrectly.
  • Lifestyle factors include how stressed you are, how much exercise you do and what you eat and drink
  • Cognitive factors are your thoughts, beliefs and emotions

Everyone has a unique combinations of these factors

Pain management addresses the factors causing pain rather than the symptoms and includes:

  • Myofascial release
  • Cognitive behavioural strategies
  • Education – understanding pain
  • Stress reduction
  • Individualised body and brain training programme
  • Graded motor imagery
